Welcome to Hillside Poultry Farm

At Hillside Poultry Farm, we raise clean, fresh, hormone- and antibiotic-free poultry on our farm in North Truro, Massachusetts (and in the winter in Belchertown, Massachusetts). We use the Pastured Poultry system developed by the West Virginia native Joel Salatin (mentioned in the book The Omnivores Dilemma by Michael Pollan and featured in the documentary film Food Inc.).

At the present time, we are raising two types of birds:

Red Bro

This breed of chicken was domesticated by our ancestors and is one of the better meat birds. The Red Bro has a normal white to dark meat ratio and is said to be the tastiest bird of all the meat chicken varieties. This bird is not genetically modified and is an heirloom variety. These birds take between 9-11 weeks to grow to maturity.

Cornish Rock

These are hardy, predominantly white meat birds with broad breasts and a larger body. The most common chicken raised in the United States, the Cornish Rock is a hybrid, meaning that it is a genetic cross using a gene splicing technique. (There are no proven health risks to this modification, but we are giving full disclosure so that consumers can make an informed choice.) Cornish Rocks are less expensive, they are ready in 8 weeks vs. 10 and have consistently good meat.
